What is an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
An Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is an advanced industrial wastewater facility engineered to purify industrial process wash-water, chemical bath discharge, coolant runoff, and toxic liquid waste. The ETP neutralizes pH extremes, precipitates heavy metals, breaks down complex organic pollutants (COD/BOD), separates free and emulsified oils, and dewaters hazardous chemical sludge into dry cakes for safe disposal or resource recovery.
Essential ETP Treatment Stages
- 1. Pre-Treatment & Equalization : Coarse screening removes floating debris, followed by Oil & Grease Traps or Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) units to separate free and emulsified oils. The effluent flows into an Equalization Tank with submersible mixers or air sparging to balance chemical concentrations and hydraulic flow variations.
- 2. Physico-Chemical Treatment (Coagulation & Flocculation) : Effluent is pumped into Flash Mixers where chemical coagulants (Poly-Aluminum Chloride - PAC, Alum, Ferrous Sulfate) and lime/acid are added for pH adjustment and chemical neutralization. Polymer flocculants are added in a Flocculator to bind micro-flocs into heavy coagulated masses that rapidly settle out in a Clariflocculator or Tube Settler.
- 3. Secondary Biological Aeration : For organic-rich industrial effluents (food processing, pharma, paper), clarified effluent enters biological aeration tanks (MBBR or Extended Aeration) where acclimated microbial strains digest dissolved organic compounds, drastically reducing BOD and COD levels.
- 4. Sludge Dewatering (Filter Press) : Chemical and biological sludge settled in clarifiers is pumped to a heavy-duty Plate and Frame Filter Press or Centrifuge. The system compresses wet sludge into dry sludge cakes, drastically reducing hazardous solid waste volume for economical handling.
- 5. Tertiary & Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Systems : For factories striving for complete water recycling, treated effluent passes through Sand/Carbon Filters, Ultrafiltration (UF), High-Recovery RO, and Multiple Effect Evaporators (MEE) / Agitated Thin Film Dryers (ATFD) to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge.
