What is a Sewage Treatment Plant
A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a specialized engineering facility designed to process domestic sewage generated from toilets, kitchens, bathrooms, canteens, and washing utilities. Untreated domestic sewage contains suspended organic matter, harmful pathogenic bacteria, chemical detergents, and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.
An STP utilizes physical screening, biological digestion, settling, and tertiary filtration to treat raw wastewater into clean, clear, odorless water suitable for secondary non-potable applications including flushing, garden landscaping, dust control, and cooling tower makeup water.

What is a Sewage Treatment Plant
- Water Cost Reduction : Enables housing societies and commercial hubs to recycle 70% to 80% of domestic water, significantly cutting expensive water tanker bills.
- Groundwater Protection : Prevents untreated domestic sewage from polluting local groundwater tables and rivers across Pune (such as the Mula and Mutha rivers).
- Regulatory Compliance Support : Helps facilities adhere to domestic effluent discharge norms prescribed by state and municipal environmental authorities.
- Resource Conservation : Supports sustainable urban development by closing the water recycling loop..
In-Depth Stages of Sewage Treatment
A properly engineered STP operates across four sequential treatment stages:
- 1. Primary Treatment (Screening & Equalization) : Raw sewage first passes through manual or automatic mechanical bar screens to catch coarse solids, plastic wrappers, and rags. The screened sewage flows into an Equalization Tank fitted with coarse bubble air diffusers or submersible mixers to balance hydraulic flow spikes and neutralize sewage concentration fluctuations throughout the day.
- 2. Secondary Biological Treatment (Aeration & Digestion : Equalized sewage is pumped into the Biological Aeration Tank, where twin-lobe air blowers supply continuous dissolved oxygen (DO). Heterotrophic microorganisms (bio-culture) digest organic pollutants, converting them into carbon dioxide, water, and biological cell mass. This stage dramatically reduces Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).
- 3. Clarification & Settling : The treated water-biomass mixture flows into a Secondary Clarifier / Tube Settler. Biological sludge settles to the bottom by gravity and is continuously recirculated back to the aeration tank (Return Activated Sludge - RAS) to maintain bio-culture balance, while clear overflow water moves to the holding tank.
- 4. Tertiary Filtration & Disinfection : Clear water passes through a Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) to trap residual suspended solids and an Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) to remove residual color and odor. Finally, Sodium Hypochlorite dosing, Ozone, or UV Disinfection neutralizes pathogenic bacteria before storage for non-potable reuse.

Frequently Asked Questions
MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) is widely preferred for residential societies due to its compact physical footprint, low operational complexity, minimal sludge generation, and strong resistance to load variations. Where basement space is tight, MBR is an excellent compact alternative.
Foul odors occur when sewage becomes septic due to insufficient aeration, septic conditions in equalization tanks, stagnant dead zones, or improper sludge wasting. We inspect the plant, re-balance dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, flush diffusers, add fresh bio-culture, and install odor control units if necessary.
Key parameters tested include pH, Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Oil & Grease, and Fecal Coliform counts to ensure treated water is safe for non-potable reuse.
Yes. We integrate smart level switches, motorized auto-multiport valves, and PLC-based control panels to automate sewage transfer, aeration timing, filter backwashing, and pump alternation automatically.
